This is a portrait of my great, great grandmother. (My mother's grandmother.) Her name was Abitagamigookwe (Half in the Earth Half in the Sky Woman).
She was Chippewa (Ojibwa). There are no photographs of her therefore I didn't actually know what she looked like. However, after long meditations and many facial revisions, I believe I have captured her true likeness.
I sign this series of paintings with my Chippewa (Ojibwa) name Gizhaadamokwe and my family's fish clan symbol.
